The A201 from Finnish Artek is a sleek, stylish lamp consisting of two steel cylinders and a perforated brass ring, which not only provides a beautiful detail but also a glare-free lamp.
Designed by Alvar Aalto, the lamp reflects light through both the upper and lower parts to create an effect similar to sunlight – in addition to a warm glow, the lamp also provides practical downward lighting. The brass ring adds an elegant finishing touch and also prevents glare.
Like many of Alvar Aalto's lighting designs, A201 was designed for a specific building, namely the Säynätsalo Town Hall Library in Central Finland.

About the designer:
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921, Alvar Aalto graduated with a degree in Architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology and began his career as an architect. One of the most important works he was given was the planning of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. This project also marked the beginning of Aalto's career as a furniture designer - in fact, it was the first building designed by Aalto that was completely furnished with furniture designed by Aalto himself - including the lighting. Other important projects completed by Alvar Aalto include the Viipuri Municipal Library, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré and the Finnish Pavilions for the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1937 and New York in 1939.
