Description

Artek A333 Pendant White / Linen.

Pendant lamp A333 'Turnip' was originally designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1950s for the canteen of the headquarters of the National Pensions Institute building in Helsinki, where it still shines to this day. With its simple elegance and sculptural design, pendant lamp A333 is suitable for a wide range of spaces and interior styles. For example, you can hang it above a dining table or a kitchen island. The lamp is made of lacquered steel and has a brass-plated steel decorative ring at the bottom. The light filters through the rings at the top of the shade, creating soft and atmospheric lighting. The perforated ring that adorns the bottom of the lamp prevents glare.

This special version of Turnip, from 2024, has two different shades that further emphasise the sculptural structure of the fixture. The two-tone appearance of the A33 pendant lamp is also a reminder of the past, as the Artek luminaire collection has included textile shades in the same linen shade.

About the designer:

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921, Alvar Aalto graduated in Architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology and began his career as an architect. One of the most important works he received was the planning of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. This project also marked the beginning of Aalto's career as a furniture designer - in fact, it was the first building designed by Aalto that was completely furnished with furniture designed by Aalto himself - including the lighting. Other important projects that Alvar Aalto completed include the Viipuri Municipal Library, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré and the Finnish pavilions for the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1937 and New York in 1939.
