Description

Aalto armchair 400 "Tank" - Hallingdal 100.

This voluminous chair attracted a lot of attention and was awarded during the Milan fair in 1936.

The Fauteuil 400 was an exception compared to Aalto's previous pieces of furniture, both in form and space: Aalto had previously designed all his chairs for a particular architectural destination, but the Tank was designed as a commission for the Triennale. The firm seat and wide armrests provide a comfortable seating experience and give the chair its characteristic, tank-like appearance. The lightness of Aalto's first chairs had now changed to a more solid look and the center of gravity had been lowered, but the look was still airy and organic.

Armchair 400 is available in different upholstery options: the zebra fabric is one of the original upholstery options.

About the designer:

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921 Alvar Aalto obtained a degree in Architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology and began his career as an architect. One of the most important works he was commissioned was the planning of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland.

This project also marked the beginning of Aalto's career as a furniture designer - in fact this was the first building planned by Aalto to be completely furnished with furniture designed by Aalto himself - including the lighting. Other major projects completed by Alvar Aalto include the Municipal Library of Viipuri, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré, and the Finnish pavilions for the 1937 Paris and 1939 New York World Expositions.
