The String Pocket wall cabinet by designer Nisse Strinning is beautiful and functional and offers many storage solutions for every room and comes packed in 1 package.
The issue was: How do you let a design stand the test of time? It's easy, just go for a perfect balance of functionality and form. Then keep refining and developing the idea over and over to ensure it keeps pace with changing times. This is precisely why airy String shelving system has become a popular design icon, a shining example of timeless Scandinavian design.
It all started for String with a revelation and a competition. In 1949, leading Swedish publishing house Bonniers realized that people would probably buy more books if they put them somewhere. With this in mind, Bonniers launched a competition calling for a racking solution that is affordable, easy to ship, easy to assemble and easy to install.
The Nils and Kajsa Strinning couple took part and won the competition with their ingenious solution: a flexible, elegant and minimalist shelving system that could be mounted on any wall. And voilà: String was born. The design was an immediate success and Nils Strinning became famous as one of the most influential designers of the modern Scandinavian era.
In the following years, Nils and Kajsa continued to refine the String system to perfection, so that it was not only beautiful but also functional. Where the architect Nils was fast and innovative with a steady stream of new concepts, designer Kajsa was thorough, artistic and patient. Together they created a timeless system that could be expanded and adapted indefinitely with the addition of shelves, folding tables, cabinets and so on.
The benefits of String are still evident today to customers around the world. Modern since 1949, the String family has consistently evolved and expanded to fit a modern lifestyle. And just as the first version of String was a prize winner, the String system has continued to win awards and recognition such as the Gold Medal at the Triennale in Milan (1954), classified as a work of applied art under copyright (2009 ) and the German Design Award (2016).
Over time, the String family has expanded with the addition of other variations, such as String Pocket, String System and Works ™ .. by String Furniture. We continue to develop, refine and adjust String to ensure that it is a working shelving system that is much more than books - it is a system that can be adapted to your home and your belongings.
