Commissioned to create the artwork for a poster marking Artek’s 85th birthday, Karoliina Hellberg gravitated towards the Aalto House in Helsinki. The Finnish artist, noted for her intense, multi-layered and often autobiographical paintings, spent many hours in the house and surrounding garden with her papers and inks, sketching and drawing. She learnt that the Aaltos considered gardens to be part of an overarching architectural experience, that they could be rooms in their own right.

The Artek 85 Anniversary poster features the painting, created by Finnish artist Karoliina Hellberg on the occasion of her visit to Alvar and Aino Aalto's home in Helsinki, Finland. The painting shows two Riihitie flower pots, designed by Aino Aalto, and elegantly captures Aaltos' attention to detail and how they viewed the garden as an extension of the home.
The original artwork, "Garden as a Room", was created after Hellberg's visit to The Aalto House, the former home of architects and Artek co-founders, Alvar and Aino Aalto, which now serves as a museum. In particular, the artist sketched details of the home's garden, drawing her attention to the flower pots that lined the terrace - only later did she discover that they came from Aino Aalto's pen and are now part of Artek's range. The original artwork was created with mixed media: watercolors, acrylic paint and ink.
