The A331 ceiling lamp, also known as the Beehive, is one of Aalto's classics. For Alvar Aalto, lighting design and architecture went together. Most Aalto's lamps are part of a larger architectural plan. In Aalto's lighting we can find the same principles as in his architecture.
When planning rooms, a big attention was put on where windows had to be placed and on light illuminating the room. In the Beehive lamp, we can clearly see a reference to this characteristic of Aalto's architecture. The lamp has a structure which allows the light to be diffused through the brass elements that join the aluminium sheets.
Thanks to the brass, the light gets the right warm shade. It was very important for Aalto that the lamp's light is warm and that's why he used brass.
