The Tropique is a design by Mathieu Matégot from 1951, and consists of a slim, playfully curved metal frame with high-quality inner-exterior cladding. As an extra to the original design, the upholstery is now easily replaceable, further extending the life of the chair and adapting it to personal taste.
The Tropique collection was designed in the 1950s and relaunched by GUBI as part of the GUBI goes al fresco range. Though out of production for decades, Tropique remains one of the few collections that most shaped Matégot's early career with its decadent aesthetic inspired by life on the Côte d'Azur in the mid-20th century - the furniture series is reminiscent of champagne luxury hotels, champagne towers and indescribably beautiful views of the Mediterranean.

About the designer:
Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) made sets and tapestries for the National Theater after his studies at the Budapest School of Fine Arts. He settled in France in 1931 and was imprisoned in the French army as a volunteer and not released until 1944.
After returning home, he started producing handmade furniture in Paris. For a decade, Matégot created several design classics, but in the early 1960s he changed course to focus on designing tapestries, for which he gained international fame.
