Arne Jacobsen originally designed the Egg chair for a hotel lobby in Copenhagen, the SAS Royal Hotel, which was also designed by him.
Arne Jacobsen is widely regarded as the world's first designer who designed not only the building but also the furniture, cutlery, lighting fixtures, textiles, door handles, signage, glassware and many other details.
With this collection, Arne Jacobsen has created a style that has become characteristic of the 1950s. He made seating furniture inspired by silhouettes from nature. An egg, a drop, a swan or ant, these were transformed into modern design.
The Egg was designed for the hotel lobby of the SAS together with the Swan chair and other furniture by Arne Jacobsen, both chairs immediately caught the eye when they opened in 1958, and were put into production not long after.
The Egg Chair is a real lounge chair in which you can relax. Due to the organic shape of the seat, your back is completely enclosed, and the armrests and backrest form a kind of cocoon in which you sit safely and comfortably.
The chairs are therefore very suitable for your living room, such as the reading corner or a bay window, but people can also wait pleasantly and comfortably in a safe environment in a waiting room.
The shell is still stitched today, a fabric version needs more than 500 stitches and the leather version even has more than 1100. The double number of stitches in the leather version has to do with the fact that there two full cowhides are used for the upholstery, while the fabric version only needs one piece of fabric. The Egg Chair has a rotating base made of polished aluminum and is equipped with a tilting mechanism that can be adjusted to the weight of the user. The armchair can be tilted to a depth of 95 cm.
With this design style, Arne Jacobsen has shaped the concept of modern design. The Swan and Egg therefore never look dated and are therefore design classics.
