This chair was originally designed in 1965 for furniture manufacturer Holger Christiansen, but the V11 has now become a respected Illum Wikkelsø design classic.

Found everywhere from the office of the President of Japan to the palace of the King of Saudi Arabia, the chair has maintained an unwavering appeal among collectors and design enthusiasts in the decade since its launch.

The V11 chair is a testament to designer Illum Wikkelsø's resolutely modern, avant-garde style, but it is only once you sit in it that the exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to physical comfort and flexibility become immediately apparent.

The success of the V11 chair is in no small part due to its distinctive design. The trapezoidal frame rests on four tapered legs made of solid wood, in the shape of an inverted pyramid that echoes the angular contours of the armrests and backrest. This gives the chair a modernist silhouette, while retaining the look of a classic lounge chair.

Wikkelsø, a gifted furniture maker, often created furniture with a very complex construction, and the V11 armchair is no exception. Each element had to be crafted by hand and due to the unusual shape of the chair's body, the upholstery attachment had to be placed visible at the top rather than hidden at the bottom. To give it a seamless piping edge requires the utmost upholstery skills as any imperfections become clearly visible.

The wooden frame and legs are made of FSC®-certified solid oak or walnut (FSC®-C176589). The seat features a classic spring system that supports four removable feather-filled cushions, ensuring comfort on all sides. It is a chair you can sink into and sit in for hours. The V11 ottoman's unique cushion can be easily removed for cleaning.

About the designer:

The Danish furniture designer Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) believed that furniture should be built to last, to pamper the body and to please the eye. With his clear design aesthetic and deep knowledge of materials, he was one of the key players in making the Danish style an international phenomenon. Wikkelsø worked with clean lines, but he also had a strong sense of organic expression and was deeply inspired by nature – especially the Danish landscape. His deep understanding of form was matched by a profound commitment to exemplary levels of functionality and ergonomics.
