The colorful hearts are a design by the American architect and designer Alexander Girard, who had a great influence on post-war American design.

Together with Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the prominent figures of post-war American design. Girard mainly focused on textile design, but was also praised for his graphic work and his furniture, exhibition and interior design. Girard added a touch of playfulness to twentieth-century design – something that was missing from the strict aesthetics of classical modernism at the time.
