The fairy tale character "The Match Girl" (or Matchsticks) comes from a famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
The story takes place in winter, on a cold New Year's Eve. The wind blows through the deserted streets of the city, which are covered with a thin layer of snow. The girl is lonely, hungry and cold, and her thin clothes offer little protection against the bitter cold. While she tries to sell matches, she is ignored by the people around her, who are in their warm homes.
Every time the girl lights a match, a little bit of warmth and light comes into her life. In those brief moments she sees images of joy and comfort: a warm stove, a festively laid table, and finally her deceased grandmother, who was the only one who truly loved her.
