With innovation and circularity at its core, Mat is an exploration of how to create a contemporary shell chair with materials that have a lower environmental impact than the industry norm.
Designed by Danish design studio Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, this new chair design is the result of years of research and development. The shell of the Mat Chair is innovatively crafted using hemp and eelgrass, a type of seaweed. The materials constitute the very essence of the design.
Not only do the materials provide a more responsible product, they also play a key role in the aesthetic of the design, highlighting the natural beauty and tactility of the materials. With circularity and responsibility at its core, the Mat collection is designed for disassembly and recycling, ensuring that the components of the Mat Chair can be recycled into new productions for a fully circular life cycle.

Peter Hiort-Lorenzen and Johannes Foersom are both educated woodworkers who have had a design company together for 50 years. As a result of their many years within the design industry, both have become central characters in the Danish design community and are internationally acclaimed as two of Denmark’s most recognized and established furniture designers. About their design approach, Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen explain: “The understanding of the sociological, ergonomic and human aspects are extremely important when creating a good design. We work at the intersection of these elements, while simultaneously striving to challenge the norms of materials and production processes. The fascinating part for us is when form, function, material and innovation merge into a design that people want to use, not just now, but for generations”.
