The famous Beetle chair is a unique result of the collaboration between the Italian and a Danish designer: the design duo Gam-Fratesi. The duo Gam-Fratesi consists of Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi, and they got their inspiration for the famous Beetle collection from the insect world. For example, they researched the anatomy of insects, including the beetle, and based the design for the iconic Beetle chair on that.
The chair has been given an organic shape with a sturdy hard shell (armor) and thin legs for an airy effect. Gam-Fratesi's designs always have a traditional design with surprising modern aspects. This also applies to the Beetle chair. The dining chair has an elegant appearance and is also very comfortable, with a backrest that moves along perfectly. A design chair that easily fits into any interior. The Beetle chair combines effortlessly with modern and classic wooden dining tables, or tables made of steel, glass dining tables.
The Beetle chair was introduced in 2012 and has been a great success in everyone's home ever since, and they are also very popular in restaurants and hotels. The Beetle chair comes in many different versions: for the base, there is a choice of thin conical steel legs (in matt black, chrome-black, chrome, brass and antique brass), wooden legs, stackable legs or with a swivel foot.
The seat of the chair is made of sturdy recycled polypropylene and comes in various beautiful colours and materials. The chair can also be upholstered in all kinds of fabrics and leathers from different manufacturers (including Gubi itself). If you choose to upholster the chair, the chair will also get a so-called piping / piping of the same fabric or contrasting fabric or a piping of leather (cognac or black leather) around the entire seat.

Beetle & Bat in recycled plastic.
In a major step towards more responsible production, GUBI has redeveloped GamFratesi’s beloved designs using a recycled-plastic composite. Utilizing advanced technology and customized material blends comprising over 50% recycled plastic, GUBI has been able to make production significantly more responsible, while retaining the same quality and performance as virgin plastic. Every variant of both Beetle and Bat will now be available in the new material – a leap forward in GUBI’s journey towards phasing out virgin plastic.
The resulting chairs look as good and perform as well as they always have, while halving the virgin materials required, leading to a significant reduction in GUBI’s environmental impact. At the end of the chairs’ lives, the Beetle and Bat’s constituent plastic can be recycled endlessly, closing the loop on the circular economy.
