Design by Gamfratesi.
Named after ancient epic poems, GamFratesi's Epic table for GUBI is a sculptural piece of furniture inspired by Greek columns and Roman architecture. Made in Italy from travertine stone, the monolithic shape emphasizes the materiality of the stone, the natural beauty of its veins and the vibrant texture of its unique patina.
The Epic table is a hommage to the Italian travertine stone, in response to the growing desire for the honesty and authenticity of natural materials. The introduction of this little-known stone and the careful selection of colors and open textures keep its materiality alive in the end product. Individual pieces are selected based on the strength of their veins and stripes, making each table a unique and "one off a kind" piece. A light filler and matte treatment on the table top and foot protect the surfaces while maintaining natural authenticity is saved.
Inspired by historical examples of travertine constructions such as the Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the revival of the material in Southern Europe in the 70s, the table combines two simple geometric shapes, the circle and the hexagon, with references to the classical Greek column. This new expression shows and improves the material, while maintaining a formal simplicity. The hexagonal column is an intelligent solution with which a substantial expression can be efficiently constructed from minimal materials.
The stone options are: neutral white, vivid gray or colorful red, each of which creates an intensity. Due to the different heights and diameters within the Epic Table series, a single monochromatic table can stand on its own or be combined in dynamic clusters of different heights and colors.
