The designer:
Sven Middelboe had a commercial diploma, but design became his chosen path - and lighting his specialty. In the late 1940s he had his own company as a lighting manufacturer together with the well-known designer and architect Jørn Utzon. The collaboration between the two included the now iconic Sundowner and Tivoli lamps, which at the time were painted under rather primitive conditions and assembled by hand.
In 1955, Middelboe was hired as an in-house designer at Nordisk Solar Company to expand the company's involvement in lamp manufacturing. Sven Middelboe has designed lamps for decades, and his expression and choice of materials evolved with changing trends. His early fixtures were made of glass or metal or a combination of both, but from 1970 on, Middelboe designed a wide range of plastic lamps in trendy colors.
Throughout his career, Sven Middelboe continued to experiment with different roof constructions and combinations, resulting in the Verona pendant, which was introduced in 1978. The series quickly gained popularity and today Verona is considered one of the most iconic pendants in Sven Middelboe's wide range of lighting designs.
