This outdoor rug called Unikko is decorated with the iconic Marimekko pattern by Maija Isola. The Unikko pattern was designed in 1964.
However, Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, announced that no floral motifs would be designed at Marimekko.
But Maija Isola wasn't having it and in protest she designed a whole collection of striking floral patterns – today Unikko is one of Marimekko's most beloved patterns and is recognized all over the world.
This Marimekko carpet was made in collaboration with the high-quality Dutch carpet maker Brink & Campman and is hand-tufted from PET yarn. The material is made from recycled plastic bottles, although you may not believe it: the texture and appearance are more reminiscent of a traditional wool rug.
The color scheme reflects the green, orange and white tones known from other Unikko 60th anniversary products.
