The VL 56 pendant lamp was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1956 for Folkets Hus (The People's House) in Copenhagen.

The entire building was a complete work of Lauritzen, where he designed everything from doorknobs and stairs to furniture and lamps.

The hanging lamp VL 56 can still be found above the bar in the building, which nowadays serves as a concert hall and is called Vega. Both the chrome and brass versions provide exceptional downward light, and the radial perforated pattern softens the contrast between light and dark, while also casting a beautiful pattern on the surrounding surfaces.

The VL56 Pendant Lamp is available in two versions. One version is made of chromed aluminum with a high-gloss finish, while the other is made of untreated brass (this patinas nicely after a while). The insides of both versions are painted white, so that the light is distributed in a beautiful harmonious way over the illuminated surface.

The dimensions of the lamp are, diameter of 36.3 centimeters and a height of 17.7 centimeters.

About the designer:

Architect and designer Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was one of the most important Danish architects of his time and a figurehead of Danish functionalism. Lauritzen's work can still be seen all over Denmark – the Nørrebro Theater, Daells Varehus in Copenhagen and Kastrup Airport's first terminal are great examples of his modernist style. Lauritzen often also designed the furniture and lighting for his buildings, and some of his most famous design pieces are the Radiohuset lamps, designed for the Frederiksberg radio building and produced by Louis Poulsen. "No life without aesthetics" was Lauritzen's firm conviction and he regarded architecture as a form of applied art. Founded by Lauritzen in 1922, Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter is today one of Denmark's most highly regarded architectural firms.
