Description

Artek - A331 Pendant " Beehive" white/brass.

Pendant Light A331 “Beehive” was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1953 for the University of Jyväskylä. Its sculptural form consists of an aluminium shade and brass-plated steel rings that create a beautiful diffusion of light. Pendant Light A331 is best suited for spaces where atmospheric and warm lighting is required whether in dining areas, living rooms, or bedrooms.

More;

The Artek A331 pendant lamp, also known as the Beehive is one of Aalto's classics. For Alvar Aalto, lighting design and architecture went together. Most Aalto lamps are part of a larger architectural plan. In Aalto's lighting we can find the same principles as in his architecture.

When planning rooms, a lot of attention was paid to the placement of windows and the lighting of the space. In the beehive lamp we clearly see a reference to this characteristic of Aalto's architecture. The lamp has a structure that allows the light to be diffused through the brass elements connecting the aluminum plates.

Thanks to the brass, the light gets the right warm shade. It was very important to Aalto that the lamp is warm and that is why he used brass. With the matte white this forms a nice contrast.

About the designer:

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921, Alvar Aalto obtained a degree in Architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology and began his career as an architect.

One of the most important works he was commissioned was the planning of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. This project also marked the beginning of Aalto's career as a furniture designer - in fact this was the first building planned by Aalto to be completely furnished with furniture designed by Aalto himself - including the lighting.

Other major projects completed by Alvar Aalto include the Municipal Library of Viipuri, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré, and the Finnish pavilions for the 1937 Paris and 1939 New York World Expositions.
