The Vitra Elephant is a design by Charles & Ray Eames from 1945, but was not put into production until much later. The process of bending plywood took several years, but first a lot of experimentation had to be done because of the material used. For a long time, the only existing copy stood in the Modern Museum of Art in New York until now, of course.

Vitra has now come much further with the technology to produce this special design with all its curves and it is possible for everyone to enjoy this wonderful design elephant. After the plastic version that is very suitable for children, there is now the plywood version covered with beautiful American cherry veneer, a jewel for your modern interior.

Especially for the Eames Special Collection, Vitra is now launching a limited edition of the Eames Elephant in 2023, made from stained dark green plywood. About the designer:

Ray and Charles Eames were an American designer couple whose name is known to anyone with an interest in modern design. Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied architecture at the University of Washington and, at the invitation of the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, continued his studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, Michigan in 1940. There he met Eero Saarinen, with whom he entered a competition called " Organic Design in Home Decor" organized by MoMA in New York. Eames and Saarinen won the competition using a plywood molding technique originally developed by Alvar Aalto. In Cranbrook, Charles Eames also met her future wife Ray, and the couple married in 1941.
