Royal Delft Tile Extinct Animals, Armoured Boar.

Moooi x Royal Delft present a special collection: original Delft Blue tiles from the Extinct Animals collection by Moooi. Inspired by the enchanting illustrations from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight unique ceramic tiles have been designed and handcrafted in the studio in Delft.

Each tile depicts an extinct animal species in fine Delft Blue and together they form an impressive and artistic collection. An ode to bygone beauty, captured in traditional craftsmanship and timeless design.

The first time a human saw an Armoured Boar in the wild, he didn’t know whether to hug it or run away. With its tiny paws, sweet face, tear-shaped eyes and funny ears, it looked cute – but it was covered in an armour-like shield that commanded respect.

According to ancient studies, the Armoured Boar developed this protective armour as a defence against predators such as tigers and wolves, depending on its habitat. It had to become stronger to avoid being grabbed from above. What remained remarkable was its friendly nature. Despite its robust appearance, the Armoured Boar was no more aggressive than a pet. Highly intelligent and social, it only showed hostility when it felt threatened or its young were in danger.

Its distinctive coat consisted of a series of black and gold scales across the top of its body, giving it an almost graceful, ornamental appearance. Males with the shiniest scales were particularly popular with females. Conversely, the ‘boys’ found it especially the ‘girls’ with particularly refined hooves that were attractive – as if they were wearing miniature stilettos.

A decorative tile in any modern interior

This tile is one of eight unique tiles from the Extinct Animals collection by Moooi x Royal Delft. The special tile, handmade in the studio in Delft, has a subtle hanging hook. This makes it easy to hang as a work of art – for example next to wall plates or other decorative elements.
