Description

Royal Delft Tile Extinct Animals Dandelion Cranes.

Moooi x Royal Delft present a special collection: original Delft Blue tiles from the Extinct Animals collection by Moooi. Inspired by the enchanting illustrations from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight unique ceramic tiles have been designed and handcrafted in the studio in Delft.

Each tile depicts an extinct animal species in fine Delft Blue and together they form an impressive and artistic collection. An ode to bygone beauty, captured in traditional craftsmanship and timeless design.

Dandelion Cranes belonged to the order Gruiformes – a group that includes many living and extinct bird species. What made these cranes special was their lively nature and their deep bond with each other. Dandelion Cranes were always born as twins and remained inseparable until they found their mate. They were rarely seen in groups; usually only two were seen together – a pair of twins or a couple in love.

Their most striking feature was the blue, fluffy crown of feathers on top of their heads. No other crane species in history had such a sparkling blue headdress. Although the bloodline still lives on in the modern Balearica species (the Crowned Crane), those birds have different coloured crowns.

What made the blue crown of the Dandelion Crane so unique was that the feathers behaved like dandelion fluff. Once a feather was fully grown, it would fall off and be carried by the wind – floating gently through the air like a dandelion seed. This is how the Dandelion Cranes got their name.

Yet it was not their crown, but their brilliant colours and fan-shaped wings that were most striking. Flaming red and burnt orange contrasted with the deep blue feathers and crown. The unusual folds in their wings not only gave them a graceful appearance, but also unparalleled speed in the air. When they spread their wings, it sounded like the unfolding of a paper fan – a soft, rhythmic sound that accompanied their flight.
