Moooi x Royal Delft present a special collection: original Delft Blue tiles from the Extinct Animals collection by Moooi. Inspired by the enchanting illustrations from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight unique ceramic tiles have been designed and handcrafted in the studio in Delft.
Each tile depicts an extinct animal species in fine Delft Blue and together they form an impressive and artistic collection. An ode to bygone beauty, captured in traditional craftsmanship and timeless design.
The Mimic Moth was known as the “chameleon of the butterflies” – a cheerful fluttering creature that was active both day and night, unlike its nocturnal relatives. What made this moth unique was its ability to change its appearance, adapting to the flower it was resting on. Due to their large numbers and ever-changing appearance, it took a long time for travelers to realize that they were always looking at the same animal.
Mimic Moths lived in tight colonies, were social and cared for each other. Instead of light, as with most moths, they were attracted to the bright colors and patterns of now extinct flowers. Only during the “night flower” season could Mimic Moths be seen in the dark. Their favorite late bloomers? The Moon Orchid – a bright pink flower with bright yellow spots that only bloomed in moonlight – and the Lily-of-Dusk, with pastel, rainbow-colored petals that only opened at sunset and closed again at sunrise.
These flowers formed a colourful and enchanting playing field in which the Mimic Moths fluttered endlessly – a spectacle of colour and movement, full of life and rhythm.
